Fraud, Scams and Identity Theft

Tuesday, October 24, 11 am-1pm

Protect Your Business and Your Customers from Identity Theft

Providing information  on identity theft prevention and recognition. With guest speakers from:

  • NH Office of the Attorney General-Department of Justice

Identity theft occurs when someone possesses or uses your name, address, Social Security number, bank or credit card account number, or other identifying information without your knowledge with the intent to commit fraud or other crimes. These days, it is almost impossible to be in business and not collect or hold personally identifying information – names, address, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or other account numbers – about your customers, employees, business partners, students or patients. If this information falls into the wrong hands, it could put these individuals at risk for identity theft.

SBA Seeks Nominations for 2007 Small Business Awards

"Our awardees are honored both locally and nationally," said William K. Phillips, SBA's NH district director.  "This is a great opportunity for employees to recognize and nominate the owner of the business they work for; or for chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, banks and civic organizations to nominate deserving individuals in their community to be recognized for their entrepreneurial achievements, small business advocacy and contributions to the local economy," he said.

Any person or organization can submit a nomination, providing they follow the guidelines established by the SBA.

For more than 40 years, the SBA has celebrated Small Business Week, and honored a successful "Small Business Person of the Year" from every state.  These state winners travel to Washington to participate in the national celebration and compete for the title of national Small Business Person of the Year.

The SBA also recognizes the accomplishments of small business champions - individuals or organizations dedicated to supporting small businesses.  Champion Awards include: Women in Business, Minority, Veteran, Financial Services, Home-based Business and Small Business Journalist.

In addition, the SBA honors successful small business owners under age 30 with its SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year award; and has a SBA Family-Owned Small Business of the Year  which honors a family owned and operated business which has been passed from one generation to another with at least a 15-year track record.  This award is presented in honor of Jeffrey Butland, SBA Region I, Regional Administrator who passed away unexpectedly in August of 2004.  A Woman Business Owner of the Year is also presented as well as a Small Business Exporter of the Year award which recognizes a small company that is successfully exporting.

Winners in all categories will also be honored at a "Salute to Small Business" luncheon held in New Hampshire in May 2007.

For more information, please contact Amy Bassett in SBA's Concord, NH office at (603) 225-1606 or via email at amy.bassett@sba.gov.
